Lee Junyoung looked back on his early days with U-KISS and got incredibly honest about his career struggles on the episode of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' that aired on the 8th.

Lee Junyoung joined U-KISS as a new member back in 2014. To get ready for the stage with the rest of the group, he had to quickly memorize the choreography and lyrics for over 20 songs right before his debut. But it turned out that hard work was nothing compared to what came next.  As the group's domestic promotions started to decline, he was forced into a long hiatus. He admitted:

"When I watched the big year-end award shows, my friends were up on stage receiving cheers from the crowd. I kept wondering, 'We are in the same line of work, so why am I just sitting here instead?'"

With U-KISS on a long break and no individual schedules coming in, he wasn't making any money at all. To get through the tough financial times, he secretly started working the night shift at a convenience store right near his house.

The hardest, most heartbreaking moment came one night when he unexpectedly ran into his own manager. He recalled:

"My manager came in to buy cigarettes, and I was so embarrassed. I never wanted him to find out. I couldn't say a word, and I just cried my eyes out."

It gets even more emotional. He later found out that after his manager drove him home that night, the manager was so heartbroken that he cried in the car too.

Despite having to work a part-time job just to make ends meet, Lee Junyoung refused to give up on his dreams. During that tough hiatus, he decided to try acting. Without any connections, he had to find scripts on his own and teach himself how to act from scratch.  He confessed:

"Becoming an actor wasn't easy either. I failed more than 100 auditions. But I endured because I believed I just had to keep moving forward. I survived by telling myself, 'You can't let yourself get exhausted. You have to keep going.'"

And thank God he did, because his hard work completely paid off. He gradually built a strong acting career, starring in hit dramas and movies like 'Mask Girl,' 'When Life Gives You Tangerines,' 'Weak Hero Class 2,' and more. To top it all off, his latest drama 'Reborn Rookie,' recently wrapped up with a nationwide viewer ratings of 13.6%. Following this project, he is officially set to enlist in the military on the 21st.

Former U-KISS' Lee Junyoung reveals he secretly worked at a convenience store during career slump

Monday, July 6, 2026

U-KISS' ex-member Lee Junyoung just opened up about a brutal experience he had to go through when he first started out.

On the 6th, tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' dropped a preview for its upcoming episode on their official Youtube channel, showing Lee Junyoung looking back on his days promoting in Japan.

He revealed, "The other members were already fluent in Japanese. Meanwhile, I went over there knowing only three phrases: 'Good evening,' 'Hello,' and 'Thank you very much.'" He described the whole situation as 'brutal,' and then, it got even worse from there.

He recalled having his company dropped him off in the middle of Shibuya and told him to find his own way back to the dorm:

"It was only a 15-minute walk, but I couldn't speak the language and the company had also taken my phone. What should have been a 15-minute walk ended up taking me four hours."

Lee Junyoung explained that the company dumped him right in front of the iconic Tower Records. After he crossed the street and walked farther uphill, he completely panicked because it was his first time ever visiting Japan:

"Right then and there, I realized I absolutely had to learn the language. It was incredibly frustrating because I could only say those three phrases."

The only saving grace was that he at least knew the dorm address, which was in Kamiyamacho. With no phone and zero navigation, he had to keep stopping random people on the street and asking, "How do I get to Kamiyamacho?" Thank god he made it back safe and sound.

Actor Lee Junyoung is opening up about the worst parts of his early career.

At the end of the broadcast of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' that aired on the 1st, they dropped the preview for the next episode featuring him. In the clip, he gets super honest about the cold treatment and hurtful stereotypes he encountered while transitioning from an idol to an actor.

When host Yoo Jaesuk asked him, "What was the most hurtful thing anyone has ever said to you?" Lee Junyoung revealed that someone actually told him:

"'Don't cause trouble for the actors.'"

He opened up about how people questioned his acting skills and even assumed he'd be a burden to the production and his co-stars simply because he was an idol

He also recalled the hardships he went through in his unknown years, sharing a story he's rarely ever spoken about:

"I was working part-time at a convenience store, and my manager came in to buy cigarettes. I was so embarrassed that I cried a lot."

As soon as that emotional preview aired, the internet went into full detective mode trying to figure out who said that to him. Speculations immediately pointed toward novelist So Jaewon, but he quickly refuted the rumors

On the 2nd, So Jaewon took to his social media to clarify everything, saying:

"I'm not the person who said that to actor Lee Junyoung."

He also explained, "It's true that Lee Junyoung appeared in one of my works. It was in 2018, when he was just beginning his acting career. I think that's why people misunderstood." In fact, the two actually worked together on the 2019 OCN drama 'Class of Lies,' which was adapted from So Jaewon's novel of the same name.

He added, "I have never said anything that degrading to any actor," and strongly criticized the people flooding his DMs with abusive messages based on speculations, calling their behavior 'extremely reckless.' He concluded:

"If what I'm saying isn't true, then Lee Junyoung or his agency is free to take action against me."

For a quick recap, Lee Junyoung first entered the entertainment industry in 2014 as a member of U-KISS, and later promoted with the group UNB

He started his acting career in the 2017 drama 'Avengers Social Club' and has since built up his filmography by starring in dramas like 'Class of Lies,' 'Good Casting,' 'Please Don't Date Him,' 'Imitation,' 'D.P.',  'Let Me Be Your Knight,' and more.

Right now, he is starring as the lead in JTBC's weekend drama 'Reborn Rookie,' where he plays two roles at once: a wealthy company chairman who gets into an accident and wakes up in the body of a young soccer player, forced to return to his own company as a rookie employee.

Lee Junyoung shares the most hurtful comment he received as an actor

Monday, June 15, 2026

OSEN has reported that actor and singer Lee Junyoung has personally delivered the news of his military enlistment through a handrwitten letter.

On the 14th, Lee Junyoung posted a lengthy handwritten letter on his social media, informing fans about his enlistment.

In the letter, he began by writing, "I have spent months wondering and thinking where to even begin this story. That's why I ended up writing this myself. I am already rewriting this for the tenth time." He continued:

"I thought it would be better for me to tell you myself rather than having you hear the news through an article, so I decided to write this. I never imagined I'd be the one delivering this kind of news myself, but yes! I will be enlisting on July 21."

Lee Junyoung shared his feelings, "Before knowing my enlistment date, I used to think, 'What's the big deal? If I had to enlist, I'd just go.' But once I actually received the date, I found myself thinking about a lot of things for the first time in a while." He showed his affection for his fans by adding, "I spent a long time wondering how I should break this news to you all first. Now that I'm writing this down word by word, I feel like my heart has become a little lighter." He added:

"I will serve well and come back healthily, in my own way. Until the day I greet you again, I sincerely hope that all of you stay healthy and spend happy, meaningful time wherever you are. Thank you for always cherishing and supporting me. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year x2."

Meanwhile, Lee Junyoung is currently starring in the ongoing drama 'The New Employee Chairman Kang' and is scheduled to enlist on July 21 to fulfill his mandatory military service.

Actor Lee Junyoung expressed his gratitude for Park Jihoon, Yim Siwan, and Do Kyungsoo, who are the representative examples of successful idol-turned-actors.

On the 20th, Lee Junyoung appeared on the segment 'Guerrilla Ha Jiyoung' from Ha Jiyoung's Youtube channel,  where he met broadcaster Ha Jiyoung in Myeongdong.

Lee Junyoung mentioned that roles with masculine personalities that are completely opposite from his real-life image, such as Geum Seongje in 'Weak Hero Class 2,' Jung Hyunmin in 'D.P.,' and Choi Buyong in 'Mask Girl,' left strong impressions on viewers. He then joked, "In reality, I'm actually gentle and affectionate."

Lee Junyoung also brought up his role of a rookie employee in JTBC’s upcoming weekend drama 'Reborn Rookie' and calmly reflected on difficult memories from his own rookie years.

He confessed, "It was completely different from what I had imagined," explaining that he believed things would work out smoothly after his debut, but instead ended up facing even tougher competition due to the endless debut of younger idol groups.

Furthermore, Lee Junyoung also shocked viewers by revealing that when he first began acting in 2017 following his debut with U-KISS in 2014, he was deeply hurt by comments saying, "Don't ruin things for actors who actually deserve to succeed."

He continued, "People assume idols must get plenty of opportunities, but that isn't necessarily true. I went to countless auditions. I felt like if I gave up at that point, I'd become a failure."

Mentioning idol-turned-actors such as Park Jihoon, Yim Siwan, Do Kyungsoo, and more, Lee Junyoung said, "I'm relieved and grateful that they succeeded as idol-turned-actors. I hope to see even more idol-turned-actors in the future."

'Reborn Rookie,' starring Lee Junyoung, is scheduled to premiere on the 30th at 10.40 PM (KST).

 The chronology:

Fan prepared a joke -> Lee Junyoung misunderstands and said "Are you okay with being ugly?" -> Fan tried to explain the joke and made him try again -> Lee Junyoung said he understood, but he repeated the same mistae -> End of the call (While wondering if he did that on purpose)

I have never seen a fan sign call fails this miserably.

"Are you okay? You throw up when you see something ugly" Becomes "Are you okay with being ugly?"

The clip spread on Instagram and Lee Junyoung became aware of this incident.

And when the fan explained the situation, he commented with an apologyㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Hello. I'm the OP.
You might not be curious, but let me offer an explanation.
I showed him a joke written on a piece of paper, but the line break unfortunately made it seem like this:
"Are you okay? With being Ugly? / You throw up when you see it."
(NB: It should've been "Are you okay? You throw up when you see something ugly")
And he only read the first line! After that, I had him do it properly and told him not to misunderstandㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Lee Junyoung: "Once again, I'm truly sorry"

+The successful version

"Are you okay? You throw up when you se soemthing ugly.

Look at me. You're fine now, right?"

ㄴYes. Very much. I'm very okay.

theqoo

-He sounds like he's genuinely worried about my uglinessㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-Ah... This is the funniest video I've seen this yearㅜㅜ

-The fact that he didn't understand, but pretended he did, and tried so hard is so hilariousㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-This is so funnyㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ I'm not okay wth being ugly, Junyoung...

-Every time I see him, I always think that he looks like a knd person.

-I meanㅋㅋㅋㅋ Junyoung, you're being mean...

-I laughed so hardㅋㅋㅋ

-The fact that he repeated the same mistake twice killed meㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ I'm tearing up.

-I thought he understood but then he went, "With you being ugly?" againㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-How affectionate of him to worry about my uglinessㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ^^...

-What the f*ckㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ I wonder what was going through his mind while doing thatㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-He pretended to understand only to do the exact same mistake againㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-I meanㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Why did he do it twice?ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Was it on purpose?ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
