The Hyundai Motor union is pushing for the introduction of a new corporate welfare system that provides financial support to employees who declare themselves single. According to industry sources on the 29th, the Hyundai Motor Namyang Research Institute union has decided to add support funds for singles as one of this year's key business initiatives.
This idea was reportedly finalized through internal discussions at a recent executive committee training session held by the Namyang Research Institute union.

It is not known how much the union will offer in support funds for singles, but it is expected to be at a level comparable to marriage congratulatory support funds, amounting to several million won.
The Hyundai Motor union is expected to formalize the system of support funds for singles by considering length of service and age, and by requiring repayment of the funds if an employee changes their mind and gets married after declaring themselves single. They are likely to formally propose this system to management in the future.
Support funds for singles have already been introduced by some major corporations, including LG Uplus.
Since January last year, LG Uplus has been providing unmarried employees with 100% of the basic salary and 5 days of paid leave. LG Uplus allows employees to receive these benefits by declaring their single status on the condolence board.
SK Securities also reached a temporary agreement with its labor union earlier this year on a system where employees who declare themselves single receive a support fund of one million won.
NH Investment & Securities is implementing a system where unmarried employees receive 100% of their basic salary, similar to a marriage congratulatory fund.
Some critics argue that support funds for singles go against the serious issue of low birth rates in South Korea. However, if this support is formalized by the influential Hyundai Motor union, there is a possibility that other companies will promptly follow suit with this welfare program.
A corporate official stated, "Encouragement for declaring single status should be understood as a means to respect individual values and eliminate welfare discrimination."
