Park Jihoon reveals his dream role after 'Weak Hero' and 'The King's Warden' success: "I want to become the worst person in the world"

Singer and actor Park Jihoon has revealed the role he wants to take on in the future in a recent interview with Newsen.

Park Jihoon had already built his experience as a child actor long before making his debut in 2017 with Wanna One through Mnet's 'Produce 101 Season 2.' Since then, he has starred in dramas such as 'Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency,' 'Love Revolution,' 'At a Distance, Spring Is Green,' 'Love Song for Illusion,' 'Weak Hero Class 1,' 'Weak Hero Class 2,' movie 'Beautiful Audrey,' and more. In particular, he also starred in 'The King's Warden' which was released in February and attracted a cumulative viewers of 16.88 million viewers as of June 2nd, earning nicknames like 'Danjong Oppa' and '16 million viewers actor.'

From Yeon Sieun in 'Weak Hero,' to Lee Hongwi in 'The King's Warden,' and now Kang Sungjae in 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier,' Park Jihoon already has several signature roles recognized by the public. In a recent interview with Newsen, he shared, "I'm always grateful when people call me by my character names. Sometimes, it feels even better than hearing my own name." He continued:

"When people called me 'Sungjae-ya' instead of 'Jihoon-ah' during the filming of 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldierm' it made me feel like I was doing a good job. When someone unconsciously calls me by my character name, it feels amazing."

Park Jihoon also shares the type of character he wants to challenge himself next:, "If I have one wish, I'd love to play a bad guy. Most of the characters I've played have been kind-hearted people who stand up against injustice. Honestly, I'm curious about how I would portray a villain role." He added: 

"I want to become the worst person in the world. You know how when an actors stars in a daily dramas and the aunties in the restaurant would get completely immersend and talk about them? I'm curious about how people would look at me if I played a villain role in a successful project. I'm curious about what I would feel on set while portraying that role and how I would express it."

'Danjong Oppa' Park Jihoon declares his enlistment in the Marine Corps next year: "Even if my agency opposes it, I'm going"

Singer and actor Park Jihoon has declared his intention to enlist in the Marine Corps next year in a recent interview with Newsen. 

Park Jihoon is currently starring in the TVING's 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' as Kang Sungjae, a private who gradually becomes a legendary military cook. Because of his standout performance, the drama is achieving huge success on its release platforms. According to Nielsen Korea, the drama started off with a viewer ratings of 5.847% and later rose to 7.9%, dominating its time slot across all channels. It also maintained its No.1 position on TVING. 

As someone who has yet completed his mandatory military service, Park Jihoon claimed to have experienced the military life indirectly from the drama, saying, "We filmed the training scenes in the mountains in freezing weather. It felt like I could get frostbite if I didn't have heat packs all over my body. Whenever the director shouted 'cut,' I would rush into the tent to warm up by the heater." He also showed his passion as a military enthusiast, saying:

"I found those brief moments were enjoyable. Whenever I had to film scenes with a rifle, I would get into shooting positions and aim. I was completely immersed by myself, like an elementary school kid playing pretend. It's a shame there isn't any behind-the-scenes footage of it. I had so much fun running around, hiding behind trees, and joking around, but none of it was captured. It's such a bum."

However, when asked whether the drama would help prepare him for the real military service, Park Jihoon replied, "No. I don't think it will help. I think the actual military life will be completely different. It will be much tougher than this, especially since I'm going to apply for one of the more demanding units. I think will be far more challenging and exhausting." 

He added, "It made me realize just how exhausting it must be for military cooks. They wake up earlier than everyone else and finish later than everyone else. They may not be out in the middle of battlefields, but they have their own difficulties. We filmed at Gangrim Guard Post which has relatively few personnel, but I imagine it would be much harder for military cooks in larger units or dining facilities."

While it is human nature to choose the easier path, Park Jihoon's determination to join the Marine Corps remain unchanged, saying:

"Since I only get one chance to enlist, I might as well go somewhere challenging. Calling it 'unique' might sound a bit odd. I'm not saying the other branches aren't special, but the Marines require applicants to pass additional tests. I think going through that process would teach me valuable lessons."

Since the Marine Corps enlistment age limit is 29, Park Jihoon, who turned 28 this year, effectively has about one year remaining to apply. Regarding his enlistment plans, he said:

"I'm not sure exactly when yet, but if possible, I should go sooner while it's still easier physically. To be honest, I have to enlist next year. I don't know what month, but next year is my final chance to join the Marines, so I absolutely have to enlist next year." 

 

He also emphasized his determination to enlist in the Military Corps, saying:

"Even if my agency tells me not to enlist in the Marine Corps, I'm going to anyway. I'm enlisting next year. Please make sure to write it down like that in the article. I don't want to postpone my enlistment anymore. I want to fulfill my obligations to serve the country next year. Of course, I still need to apply and pass the tests, but even if I fail that the test, I still want to join the Marines. I'm not saying this because there's someone in my family who in the Marines, it's just that I want to. I'd be very grateful if you could write in the article that I'm enlisting next year."

When asked if he has any worries regarding his military hiatus, Park Jihoon answered, "A lot of actors seem to have pre-filmed projects released while they're serving in the military, so fans might think, 'Oh? He's already back?' I'm not sure about the details of my future schedules, but I think that kind of arrangement would probably be the ideal situation."

Byun Wooseok ranks 1st in drama actor brand reputation rankings… Park Jihoon takes 2nd place

Following his recent success as an advertising model, Byun Wooseok has now secured the top position in the drama actor brand reputation rankings.

According to the Korea Corporate Reputation Research Institute on the 13th, big data analysis for drama actor brand reputation in May 2026 placed Byun Wooseok in 1st, Park Jihoon in 2nd, and Kim Jaewon in 3rd.

The institute evaluated 116,645,333 data points from 100 actors starring in dramas that aired between April 13 and May 13, 2026. This algorithm measured brand reputation by tracking consumer participation, media coverage, communication, and community engagement.

Byun Wooseok, who ranked 1st, earned a total index of 9,363,025, with a participation index of 2,121,748, a media index of 2,191,545, a communication index of 2,634,116, and a community index of 2,415,616.

Park Jihoon, in 2nd place, earned a total index of 5,999,640, with a participation index of 908,236, a media index of 976,376, a communication index of 2,386,697, and a community index of 1,728,331, for a total index of 5,999,640.

Kim Jaewon, in 3rd place, recorded a total index of 5,032,801, with a participation index of 775,675, a media index of 1,429,986, a communication index of 1,596,318, and a community index of 1,230,823, bringing his total index to 5,032,801.

Institute director Koo Changhwan noted, "According to the May 2026 drama actor brand reputation analysis, Byun Wooseok’s brand led the rankings. Link analysis showed high rankings for terms like 'heartwaring,' 'modeling,' and 'advertising,' while keyword analysis featured 'Grand Prince Ian,' 'Perfect Crown,' and 'Mailbox.' His sentiment analysis reflected a positive ratio of 93.78%.”

After topping the May 2026 advertising model rankings, Byeon Wooseok has also topped the drama actor brand reputation rankings. He currently plays the character Prince Ian in the MBC drama 'Perfect Crown,' starring alongside IU.

After the huge success of 'The King's Warden,' which attracted 16 million viewers, expectations are rising for another potential hit project from Park Jihoon as 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' surpassed 6% ratings in just its second episode.

According to Nielsen Korea on the 13th, the second episode of the TVING original series 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' (written by Choi Ryong, directed by Jo Namhyung), which aired on the 12th, recorded a viewer rating of 6.2% nationwide among paid broadcasting households. Its peak rating even rose to 7.6%.

In the Seoul metropolitan area, the ratings were even higher, averaging at 6.7% and peaking at 7.9%. As a result, the second episode ranked No. 1 in its time slot among all cable TV and general programming channels nationwide, as well as terrestrial channels in the metropolitan area. It also ranked No. 1 across all channels among viewers aged 20-49 during its time slot.

'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' is a drama about Kang Sungjae, played by Park Jihoon, an underprivilage private second-class soldier who carries a kitchen knife instead of rifle and wears an apron instead of ammunition belts, as he rises to become a 'legendary cook soldier.' The drama is based on the popular web novel and webtoon of the same name.

The drama especially drew attention as it is Park Jihoon's next project follwwing his highly-praised performance as King Danjong in his film debut 'The King's Warden,' which recently surpassed 16 million viewers.

Actor and Singer Park Jihoon revealed that he has filmed nine commercials following the huge success of 'The King's Warden,' proving his soaring popularity.

On the 9th, a video titled 'The breakfast buffet is just an excuse' was posted on the Youtube channel 'Ddeun Ddeun.' In the video, 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' stars, including Park Jihoon, Yoon Kyungho, and Lee Sangyi, appeared as guests and chatted with Yoo Jaesuk.

When asked, "What do you do on your days off lately?" Park Jihoon, who has been active across films, dramas, and music promotions, replied, "I don't have any days off lately. I haven't had a single day off," revealing his incredibly busy life. He explained that he has been busy promoting 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier,' practicing choreography for his album, filming other Youtube content, and shooting commercials as well.

When asked, "Can we ask how many commercials you've filmed?" Park Jihoon answered, "Seven," drawing applause from the cast.

Yoo Jaesuk commented, "Beyond the success of 'The King's Warden,' from the advertisers' persepctive, the image of a king must be really good for promoting products," and added, "If you've filmed seven commercials, you must have had no time to sleep." Yoo Jaesuk remarked, "The product categories can't overlap. I'm not sure what they are, but regardless, filming nine commercials across different categories is impressive." On stage that day, Park Jihoon said, "I really want to thank Director Jang Hangjun for believing in me until the very end," expressing his gratitude toward the director who persuaded him to take part in the film.

He also added, "It was an honor to share this kind of energy with you in my life. I love you, Yoo Haejin Sunbaenim," sharing his gratitude toward his co-star before also thanking fans for their support.

Park Jihoon also received the Naver Popularity Award at this ceremony. He shared, "I know this is an award I received through the votes from fans. Thank you so much, MAY," and added, "I will always be a person who grows so that I can always show you my best side."

Meanwhile, Park Jihoon received much love for his portrayal of the ill-fated King Danjong in the film 'The King's Warden.' Set in Cheongyeongpo in 1457, 'The King's Warden' tells the story of the young former King Danjong, who was exiled after losing the throne, and the people of Gwangcheongol who welcomed him. 'The King's Warden' earns 151.8 billion KRW ... No. 1 highest-grossing film of all time

The film 'The King's Warden' (directed by Jang Hangjun) has become the highest-grossing film in South Korean box office history, earning 151.8 billion KRW.

According to the Korean Film Council on the 29th, 'The King's Warden' topped the box office for the first quarter of 2026, recording 151.8 billion KRW in revenue with 15.73 million viewers. Notably, it surpassed 'Extreme Job' to become the highest-grossing film of all time in terms of revenue.

The film's success also boosted the overall theater industry in the first quarter of this year, with 318 billion KRW in total theater revenue and 31.9 million viewers. This is the highest first-quarter figures since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. Given that the film alone surpassed 15 million viewers, it is seen as a major factor behind the year-over-year increase of 58.7% in revenue (117.7 billion KRW) and 53.2% in admissions (11.08 million viewers).

Additionally, the first-quarter revenue for Korean films in 2026 reached 233.3 billion KRW with 24.01 million viewers. This is an increase of 117.5% in revenue (126.1 billion KRW) and 115.1% in admissions (12.85 million people) compared to the first quarter of 2025. Compared to the pre-pandemic averages (2017-2019), Korean film revenue has recovered to 94.5% and admissions to 79.7% of previous averages.

In terms of distributor rankings, Showbox, which distributed three films including 'The King's Warden' and 'Once We Were Us,' ranked No.1 in the first quarter of 2026 with 173.6 billion KRW in revenue (55.4% market share). Second place went to Walt Disney Company Korea, which distributed five films including 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' and 'Zootopia 2,' recording 43.1 billion KRW in revenue (13.6% market share).

Released on February 4, 'The King's Warden' tells the story of young King Danjong (played by Park Jihoon), who was exiled to Cheongnyeongpo in Yeongwol after losing his throne to his uncle Grand Prince Suyang in 1457, and Eom Heungdo (played by Yoo Haejin), the village head assigned to watch over him. The film surpassed 1 million viewers in just 5 days, surpassed its break-even point of 2.6 million in 14 days, and reached 10 million viewers on March 6.

Singer and actor Park Jihoon opened up about the process of bringing Kang Sungjae's character to life in 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier.' Meanwhile, Park Jihoon recently achieved the '10-million actor' milestone through the film 'The King's Warden.'

Set to premiere on the 11th next month, the TVING original 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' is a military cooking fantasy drama that follows Private Kang Sungjae (played by Park Jihoon), who swaps his rifle for a kitchen knife and an anmo belt for an apron to become a legendary cook soldier.

Known as a military enthusiast, Park Jihoon personally shared behind-the-scenes stories about his role as the cook Kang Sungjae, ranging from why he chose this project to his preparation process for the role.

Regarding his decision to join this project, Park Jihoon said, "I've always wanted to wear a military uniform in a project at least once. I also wanted to take on a new challenge." He added, "I found it particularly interesting that Kang Sungjae is a character that adapts to an unfamiliar environment and builds his own place. His process of gaining trust within the unit and forming bonds with others through his amazing skills was also very appealing to me."

Park Jihoon shared that he put in an extra effort to portray Kang Sungjae's character convincingly. He said, "To realistically depict the unique role of a cook soldier, I took cooking lessons before filming. As I learned dishes one by one, my knife skills gradually improved as well."

Since the plote involves Kang Sungjae's character completing quests to level up his cooking skills, a different approach was needed. Regarding this, Park Jihoon explained, "I wanted to portray a character who gradually grows over time, using the 'Guardian,' the fictional character who delivers the quests. I imagined as if it really existed in front of me and paid a lot of attention, espexially on my eye movements and facial expressions."

As a for the nickname he hopes to gain through the drama, he chose 'Kkang Sungjae.' Park Jihoon said, "The character's nickname in the drama is Kkang Sungjae. For some reason, it made me feel good whenever I was called that. The word itself sounds quite cute, so I'd like to be called Kkang Sungjae."

Regarding the key points to watch, Park Jihoon shared, "It would be great if you could follow how Kkang Sungjae builds relationships with various characters and grows through them, as well as the chemistry that develops along the way. I also hope you take interest in the character's growth through the interesting 'Guardian' concept."

'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' will premiere on May 11 at 8.50 PM (KST) on TVING and tvN.

In the video, Park Jihoon showed off his witty charm while talking about how people reacted to the movie's success. Mentioning Director Jang Hangjun’s excitement, he joked, "The director is excited every day. He’s just one step away from becoming a master." Set in Cheongnyeongpo in 1457, 'The King's Warden' tells the story of a village chief who chooses his own place of exile for his town's success, and a young former king who was kicked off the throne and sent into exile. Currently a huge hit, the film reached the 6 million mark faster than historical hits like 'The King and the Clown' and 'The Throne.'

The 'Underage Line' who was born in 1999, 2000, and 2001 were still underage when they debuted back in 2017. Now they have become adults as they turned 24, 23, and 22 years old. 
They look more mature now, but nothing has changed at all since then
